The Handle System

Running the CNRI handle proxy server with X Mosaic

The following instructions describe how to run the CNRI handle proxy server with X Mosaic 2.7b2 and subsequent versions:

  • Create a proxy configuration file. The default file that Mosaic looks for is:

    /usr/local/lib/mosaic/proxy

  • To point to the CNRI handle proxy server, the contents of the proxy configuration file must contain:

    hdl hs.cnri.reston.va.us 8080 http

  • The proxy configuration file may be set by manually editing the file or by using the Mosaic online proxy file editing faclility. The following steps are required for using the Mosaic online help facility.

Select the 'Proxy list' item from the file menu. This generates a 'Proxies' window. Click on the 'Add' button in the 'Proxies' window to generate the 'Proxy Information' window and add the following fields:

  • Set the 'Scheme' field to: hdl
  • Set the 'Proxy Address' field to: hs.cnri.reston.va.us
  • Set the 'Proxy Port' field to: 8080
  • The 'Scheme Info' field can be left blank (see online help for further info on this field)
  • Click the 'Commit' button in the 'Proxy Information' window
  • Click the 'Save' button in the 'Proxies' window. One must have write permission to the proxy file directory.
